A crew of 3 keeps 299 miles of these gravel roads maintained and open. Open when possible. Often the snow blows back in almost as fast as they plow it.
Sometime’s the Cat 140’s 6 wheel drive needs a little help so the crews stop to chain up. The gesture is a local form of sign language which roughly translates to “you are my brother and I love you but you might be more help if you put down the camera and did something constructive.”
This is what the Rock River crew’s face when it’s time to plow the gravel roads in the North Country. It’s pretty much impossible to know where the road is without a great deal of local knowledge. You can’t just follow the latest set of snowmobile tracks.
